About
Elizabeth loves painting the ordinary in life whether it is people shopping, a pile of rubbish a poster plastered on a shop front or an old abandoned factory. The urban environment inspires her, she is fascinated by people, what are they thinking? How are they feeling? By painting portraits of people going about their business, she celebrates that snapshot of time, making the viewer stop to think about how the small things in life can be interesting.
Markets are another interesting place, they have been around for centuries, sometimes in the same place, the customers and sellers do not change, everybody needs to buy things, only what they buy, how they dress and the built environment changes.
Psychogeography, history repeats itself; every inch of the city has been inhabited by many people over hundreds of years, how does that reflect on the place now ? what’s changed and what’s stayed the same. How does the weight of history reflect on the present ?
For Elizabeth art history play a big part in influencing her work, the artists that inspire her range from Canaletto, William Powell Frith, Walter Sickert, George Bellows, Edward Hopper, and especially William Hogarth, Elizabeth like to think of herself as a modern-day Hogarth observing her world and painting it.
